I have my extended family tree on Ancestry.com where much of it is shared with some of my Canadian cousins who are also members.
I also recently purchased RootsWeb software with a view to having back up, but so far I am still finding my way around it and have only listed my direct ancestors.

I don't know about PAF, but as a fellow Mac user I'm a big fan of Reunion.

Also check with your local library. I know a few researchers who have had "free" access to sites like ancestry.com though some of the librarians who have paid for the service. Might save you a buck or two.

I've been using Legacy Family Tree for quite a few years now. I have almost 140,000 name in the tree. I do just the opposite. I do all the work in Legacy and then create a GEDCOM file and upload it to Rootsweb.com. Legacy isn't perfect, but I've tried several others and I like it the best of those I've tried.

If my hard drive were to crash, and the backup drive didn't work, I could download the GEDCOM from Rootsweb to restore the data. That's why I try to keep my Rootsweb file pretty current.
