I use a sporran strap. It is buckled at the front, just forward of my right hip. I have found no problems with tilting or hanging badly.
The advantage of using a strap rather than the chains is that the sporran can be easily slid on to the left hip for sitting, dancing close, driving or access.
I will not go back to chains.
