It may be because my own heritage is from the lowlands and was frozen in NI, meaning that my ancestors were not on cordial terms with the [kilted] highlanders, and that I've been exposed to and am therefore aware of some lingering, culturally engrained attitudes, but I also thought that this little incident helped to expose an equally lingering and engrained attitude in Scotland itself, one that in the present day amounts to an unfortunate tendency towards Scottish self-loathing and a reliance upon looking south towards England for approval and approbation- something that is never actually made available and never will be. Oh, and also the ruthlessness of that whole social phenomenon among the Scottish people themselves. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but I don't think so. We must help our Scottish cousins to help themselves. Nice work, Cousin Forrester: progress indeed.

EDIT: and I guess it was just nice to see someone push back against the British 'the way it's done' thing, which is occasionally invoked via the most ghastly inconsiderate behaviour and even outright rudeness. Rarely happens in my experience, no matter what the venue.

Once again..I do love my kilts. But honestly..There is a time and place for everything. I`ve read many or most posts on this topic. In a few threads. Thought a wee bit on it. And Ive come to the conclusion that.. this whole thing. Articles and all... is the product of a romantic Americain..Sorry this is a ridiculious topic. I`ve been to Scotland many times as well as Ulster. (born in Bangor Northern Ireland. and lived there until 16 yrs of age) Both for proper visits to Family as well as competing with bagpipes. And well, honestly if you want to look like an Americian tourist. Wear a kilt every day every where. Sorry but, reality and romance are two different things. I am sorry for your troubles man.. Im sure youre a nice enough chap but, come on man.. Leave the cocky dont take no for an answer yank back in the states where it should stay!

Now that is more than a bit harsh, Highland Mafia.
Methinks there is more Mafia about you than Highland, especially since you are so close to Detroit.

Highland Mafia - there are many more people besides "romantic Americans" interested in this issue.

It has highlighted discrimination against kilts in Scotland itself. Jeff has done a great service in highlighting that.

I agree with you on one point. Jeff is a nice enough chap.

If I'm ever fortunate enough to visit Scotland I'll be kilted full time so the locals will know I'm an American tourist

There is an old saying that if you wear a kilt in London, people will say you are a Scot. If you wear a kilt in Edinburgh, people will say you are a Highlander. But if you wear a kilt in the Highlands, people will say you are an Englishman!

Detroitpete – sorry if that hit home. ;-)

I think this is a shame a true Scottish game and someone is denied to play it wearing an authentic Scottish garment such as a Kilt. I hope this thread shows the golf course and others that this type of discriminitation isn't appropriate.
