Denied the right to wear the Kilt
Hey folks. I just heard this story from Bob & Tom this morning and thought I would share.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/Alberta...740/story.html
It seems that he is welcome to wear the kilt during the Convocation after the ceremony, but not during Commencement.
I though about doing this myself, but upon trying on the cap and gown that I would be weraing for Convocation and my Hooding Ceremony, I noticed that the gown was too long for even the bottom of the Kilt to show. Only Kilt hose and my brogues would have been visable. Most schools will allow the wearing of "ethnic" colors in the form of sashes and cords (just like for honors and fraternity/sorority membership) over the shoulders.
Given this, and I wish I had thought of this before my graduation, why not wear a tartan sash in the form of a 4-6" wide tartan draped forward over both shoulders. The clansmans badge or brooch could be used as a weight to keep this mini plaid under control during a breeze.
Not true highland wear, but a great way to add a bit of color from one's heritage during an auspicious ceremony.

On the idea of a sash, why not a fly plaid and broach?

Some graduation robes/gowns are not purchased by the graduate, just the mortarboard, so nothing can be attached/pinned/stapled or otherwise affixed to the robe itself. Some schools won't allow anything extra beyond the 'approved' Honor Society or other such distinguishing additaments. (My high school wouldn't).
A stole (described by the OP as a sash), if permitted, is probably the best solution in this case. I would suggest a chain pinned to both sides (reminiscent of a watch chain and waiscoat) to keep the stole 'under control' if necessary.

As a traditionalist, I'm not big on this whole stole idea. If it's not academic regalia, then don't wear it with items that are. Save the Highland attire for the reception/party after commencement.

I am only commenting on the issue of not being able to pin something to a garment, and not whether it should or should not be worn etc.
The thought of using a magnet to hold something down, perhaps attached to a broach, popped into my mind.
Then I thought of Nighthawk getting things stuck to his plaid broach during a wedding, and that made me laugh.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
