I wish I could show you the Prom and Homecoming pictures I'm seeing/getting for this year and last year. My "sample" is: A.) My oldest nephew-in-law, his best friend, another guy in their tuba section and their three dates. The live in Southern California B.) My friend Kathy's sisters two boys, and two of their friends and their four dates. They live in Bellingham, Washington ... C.) My friend Jim' son, his best friend, two guys on their high schools wrestling team, and their four dates. Jim lives in Colorado. D.) My friend Pat's son, and his date. Pat lives in Northern California.
So that's hardly an exhaustive survey! What strikes me, though is the uniformity of what the girls are wearing. Almost all of them are wearing a "little black dress" that is super short. My nephews date is wearing a strapless dress, gathered and belted just under the bustline. Above the belt the dress is a blue and white floral pattern. Below, it's straight black. She has "strappy" high heels on, and isn't wearing nylons, she's bare-legged.
Every single girl in the picture from Washington is wearing a classic "little black dress" in one variation or another. They're all bare-legged with high heels with very slim foot straps. The girls in Colorado have a little bit more variety, but again, black is the color of choice. One of the Colorado girls is wearing...I don't know what to call them, but they're basically like high heeled boots that only come up to ankle high. One girl is wearing a red belt. The rest...."little black dress" and super-short.
The girl from Northern California is also wearing black, and black heels, but she's wearing patterned lace hose. She has a corsage on her wrist.
This is sure not what girls wore to my proms in 1974 and 1975!
NOTE: the picture with my nephew and his friends and their dates is actually a Homecoming dance picture.
