That's what I did. I packed two kilts rolled up in my checked luggage.
I wore a USAK casual (no metal, very comfortable) for the trip.
The local TSA personnel gave me special handling, despite my not tickling their metal detector. It may simply have been too good a training opportunity to pass up. Needless to say, no one batted an eye at Gatwick.
