It's been a couple of months since we were on this subject, but I'm pleased to say that hiking through rough country, kilted, while wearing lower leg protection (specifically, WWII-era military leggings) has been pretty successful.

I hike with a good staff in my hand, and so anything that's higher than my leggings can be batted away or swept aside with the staff. The bulk of the cactus, brambles, thorny brush, etc., is below my knees.

Obviously, hiking through chest-high thorny brush is going to be a problem no matter what you're wearing. And obviously there are limits to what's reasonable in a kilt. But with gaiters or military leggings, it's a darn good compromise.
