Kilt-Wearing among modern Borderers?

I spoke with a former colleague, and almost neighbor, Patrick Glasgow (chief of Clan Boyle) about this last summer and he was of the opinion that only Highlanders should wear tartan... he made some incredibly funny remarks about tartan and kilts in general at the opening ceremony of the Greenville Scottish Games and despite being in a "shepherd's check" kilt (and panama hat!) left no doubt in anyone's mind as to his opinion on the subject of proper Scottish attire.

Rathdown's post reminded me of the attire of the Piper to the Duke of Northumberland:

I just made and sent a kilt to a pal of mine in Dumfries. I'm bugging him for pictures at this point.
I have shown a pic of it in the DIY forum. It is made in the Leslie M.C. and was the tartan of "The King's Own Scottish Borderers".

My friend is a tour guide at Drumlanrig Castle and works kilted every day.

As a Lowland regiment, the KOSBs wore trews in the Leslie tartan as per the Earl of Leven--only their pipers wore kilts, and their kilts and plaids were in the Royal Stuart tartan. See the KOSBs website here: http://www.kosb.co.uk/insignia.htm .

Same with the other Lowland regiments...the Royal Scots (save the TA "Dandy 9th" Battalion), the Royal Scots Fusiliers* and the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).

*Amalgamted in the 1950s with the HLI to form the RHF. The TA 10th Battalion, "The Glasgow Highlanders", did wear kilts.

I would think that that would do material(?) damage to the UK economy, since such a point of view would eliminate all Americans, Canadians, Kiwis, Aussies, etc., from wearing an approximation of the garb, and related accessories, of our Highland ancestors.

THIS modern borderer ( Clan Kerr } is proud to wear the kilt, even in London! However, kilts are worn more often at formal events or for specific occasons like games than as everyday wear. This applies to all regions of Scotland. When even a casual kilt is many times the price of trousers you can understand why. Let us begin the fight back!

Our hosts at a B&B in Ayr in September were of the opinion that it is becoming more common in the borders and lowlands. They said it young men frequently receive a kilt as a graduation present now, and tend to wear them more often for special occasions.
