Forgot to mention--the Warrior Dash might not be a good time to go regimental! There is a cargo net climb.

I have become addicted to making kilts..although I still suck at it, and don't have my copy of Barb's book yet..I've got four simple kilts that I made...two of them are pretty much X-kilts, except I made it up as I went along...both are box pleated, one is made of jean weight twill, and one is made of carrhart canvas...both indestructible....it takes me a couple evenings to make one...if you are so inclined, it is very satisfying to wear a kilt you have made..and you can make it out of what you want...I don't think I have more than 25 bucks in one...

    PV beater

I bought an 8 yard PV kilt from buyakilt.com last year for hiking and the likes. It is in the Scottish National tartan. I am not sure where the PV is milled, but it is thicker and coarser than the Marton Mills PV, though not fuzzy like acrylic.

It has been quite serviceable and cost all of $40 GBP. It is a three buckle kilt pleated to the ??? but looks and feels like an actual kilt vs. a lightweight low yardage casual kilt (which I also own).

I think it would also make a good starter kilt for someone not yet committed to wearing a kilt, without having to shell out the bucks for a proper wool one.

I would buy one again, for its intended purpose, if I ever had the need.

    Thumbs up

"what I am really looking for is something that can literally take a beating, get thrown into the washing machine and dryer, and be put back on again and again and again and again."

You're describing a USA Casual there! It will hold up as well or better than the acrylic "beater kilts" and you can get it made to measure.

BUT not with leather straps and buckles to ensure it stays on!!! I know, Velcro is really good. And, it does come in Campbell and Black Watch...oh, wait...same thing! Not to mention all those other great Tartans.

If you want something to practically ruin at warrior dash and then be able to bring it back to life for another round go with the sport kilt original. A washing machine, an iron, and some starch and presto! Ready for another hike or run and looking good. I have a couple of sport kilts and though they loose all fabric stiffness after a while they are still great for hard core muddiness and summer wear.

P.S. Definitely go for PV in a "knock around the mud" kilt. I speak from Warrior Dash experience. You don't want ANYTHING that will soak up a ton of water weight. PV drys out pretty quickly. Also if you go Sportkilt, make sure that if you are between sizes that you go with the smaller one. With the stretch in the waist of a sportkilt you need to be sure it won't come off during the water/mud obstacles.

My wife and I are signed up for Warrior Dash here in Michigan in July. I am glad I found this thread!

I'm a kilt newbie, so another concern I have is how heavy will a kilt be after it get's wet? There are some obstacles that are water crossings. Probably waist deep.

The water crossing are indeed about waist deep (I'm 6-2) but poly-blends dry out pretty quick. The water weight won't matter too much if your adrenaline's high.

This sound like one that I should add to the list to consider.

p.s. I'm not looking for a starter kilt, just a new, cheap, durable one that I can beat up.

Pakistan. I looked at the their offerings and their 'budget kilt' range is all the same exact tartan list and material description of kilts from Pakistan. Not knocking it, just clarifying.
