MacLaren it is, I prefer the modern. Just noted that the Caithness costs £100 more.

A sure sign that you're meant to have the MacLaren

One thing about the MacLaren modern, the yellow really stands out, my vote would be for the ancient or weathered.

Caithness tartan
Here's what one of the locals on Caithness.org thought of the Caithness tartan...
I think it's a bit too close to the Burberry tartan and hence only suitable for Caithness Chav's
I quite like it really, may get one, one day. Below are the details for anyone interested.
STA ref: 2466 STWR ref: 2466 Designer: Mann, Trudi Tartan date: 01/01/1995 Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans. Category: District
Restrictions:
Registration notes: Designed by Trudi Mann of Wick and incorporating colours of Caithness, including the unique blue grey Caithness flagstone, used in cities around the world. Woven sample in STA collection, probably from MacAllans of Wick who are the only outlet.

Thanks all.
How the Scots got that reputation for "thriftiness", I'll never know.
Good choice!

The first pipe band I played in, back in the 1970s, wore MacLaren (ancient colours) heavyweight kilts. Those kilts were lovely! Such nice glowing colours.
I myself might have gone with that Caithness tartan because it's unusual and interesting. I don't know if it's a recent design or an old one, but it has the "look" of an authentic 18th century pre-clan tartan, complex and many-coloured.

I'll have to look into that; OP 12 is my brand, after a number of years of being a Macallan drinker.
