I remember telling someone all that, and that the TV series with Jeremy Brett was more correct in showing him 'detecting' in 19th century gentleman's evening dress- and then going home the same night to see Mr Brett sporting a deerstalker in that week's episode. Anyway, and as has already been intimated, in the day they were strictly country, and not city, wear.
