I think it's now time to upgrade seeing as my 2 main tanks (a made to measure 8 yard wool Barclay Hunting and a vintage Royal Stewart) are fine quality and the cheap sporrans do not do them justice, but I'm concerned as the pics on the websites of expensive sporrans such as Kinloch Anderson do not show them as being particularly fine quality to me (the main problem I've had is tassel chains breaking easily and lack of symmetry in the build quality of the sporrans,) and I'm worried about wasting my money if pretty much anywhere you go it's the same story (i.e. knocked out on a production line with little regard for quality). Can anyone offer me some opinions please? Thanks.
1) I only have one sporran from KA (daywear black bridle leather, with tassels) and the quality is superb. I think the photos may not do them justice.
2) I normally wear a leather strap for daywear, reserving the chain for evening dress. My rule, so only applies to me, but you may care to consider. Having said that, a chain should not break. Which makers have you had trouble with?........Robbie

robbie, I think you mis-read the OP. He's had problems with TASSEL chains breaking, not the chain on the sporran strap.

I had our illustious Nightwawk custom me up a hunting sporran and it is a work of art. Give him a ring and see if he's up for doing yours. He was very reasonable and we designed it together so it is truly my one of a kind.

That sounds like a very tempting prospect and I may well do so in the not too distant future, having just bought a house I have to watch the pennies a bit for the moment though, I'll have to be satisfied just with the one I've bought for the time being.
