Personally, I wear a MacDonald tartan to more formal occasions and it has a lot of red in it.
Just asking because everyone looked great.
The reason why is.......I haven't bought one.......yet
I like red, too but didn't have time/resources to score one for our Burns Supper.
Next year.....not sure which one, but it will have red in it! Can you say Maclachlan? or Wallace (to the yellow stripe)?? Muir Ancient does have red (well, red-orange, OK?) stripes in it. Lindsay has a lot of maroon-ish color.
Sammy Hagar said it best:
"Red, red, I like red....ain't no substitute for red......."

Thanks for the insights guys. We have about 30 kilted in my AOH division but only a few of us have multiples. Those that only have one either have a Black Watch or some Stewart variation ( I usually wear a SWK Black Stewart for parades ). One guy has a kilt that is primarily purple. I don't remember what the tartan name is but it's very unique (sort of like Derek's yellow/gold - it stands out in a group.)
I guess for some reason, I never thought of the Royal Stewart look as "traditional". In our area I don't think any of the pipe bands wear something that red and they are the ones that make me think of tradition. Maybe it's the whole Rowdy Roddie Piper from another thread?

I'm partial to the MacLachlan myself ;)
but I'm in agreeance with many here. I've heard a few people say something about a kilt needing to be red. My sister, for one, was asked by my father which tartan he should get for his first kilt, between MacLachlan and MacEwen. She said MacLachlan, as "it's red, and kilts should be red." She's only 8, so I'm not sure where she picked that up, but even some youngsters have that mindset.

Royal Stewart is certainly in the general public's perception of "traditional tartan." But, so is the Wallace. I've had many people make the "Scotch Tape" connection when I wear the Wallace modern. I've also had people say "My granny had blanket with that same 'plaid' in it!"

Yeah what he said!!!!!
As a note, The tartan on Walkers Oatcakes is the North Tyneside Blue Tartan. It is the tartan of the North Tyneside Pipe Band. It is based on the Earl of St Andrews tartan with the addition of a red stripe.
