quick question on belts
what's the usual size for kilt belt?
my boyfriend's outfit is near complete, but he wants a good belt for it, but thinks it need to be more then the regular 1.5 that are found everywhere.

A dress kilt belt is 2 1/4 inches wide, a casual kilt belt can go up to 3 inches. Stillwater Kilts has some fairly inexpensive belts that look good and do the job. www.stillwaterkilts.com

Welcome to the forum, Kitty!
Your boyfriend is correct in thinking that he'll need more than a wimpy 1.5-inch wide belt for his new kilt. A manly garment like a kilt needs a manly belt!
Typically, kilt belts range from 2 to 3-inches wide with 2.25-inches being the most common. It sounds like your boyfriend's kilt in in production, now, in which case the best course of action would be to ask whoever is making his kilt how wide of a belt will the beltloops accomodate. And if your boyfriend is getting a traditional wool kilt, I'd recommend getting a lined belt, it kinder to the kilt.
There are many providers of quality kilt belts. Here's a couple of examples -

I am the one making the kilt, and I believe i put belt loops for a 3 or 3.5 belt. it looks totally awesome and i'm planning to put up pics once it's done as i've had lots of helpful hints from people on this forum.
he wanted a sporran too, but of course doesn't have the money so i did some research and made up my own pattern and decided to have a go and it's turning out really awesome too, i think.
he has an eye on this celtic tree of life belt buckle and it's supposed to fit 2.75 or 3" belt so if he wants that he'll have to have a max of 3.
thanks all for the advice

Since you said you were making a sporran I thought you might be interested in this thread. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...porran+pattern
It has a link to a pattern and a pic of one that one of the members here made..

For a quick belt for very little money, you can also go to Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. and get a tool belt for $10-$30 in varying shades of brown. That's what I did for my two UKs and it looks pretty sharp, especially with the Workman.
I actually slathered some shoe polish on it as well and let it dry. Wiped it down real hard to remove some of the excess, and voila! Instant casual kilt belt.
