Interesting pics, Beuth. One of my interests when I was younger and fitter was walking old railway routes and that included tunnels. The tunnel on the Symington to Peebles line had a small arch off to the side about half way through the six hundred yard tunnel, about five feet high and three feet wide which led into a large underground cave which appeared to be natural but looked to have been used by railway workmen as a bothy as it still contained the rusting remains of a brazier for fires for heat and cooking and some rusty old tools. That railway had closed in 1954 and I walked the route about fifteen years ago. The longest railway tunnel I've walked through is the Whitrope tunnel, at just over 1,200 yards, but this has now been sealed up for safety reasons due to a partial collapse inside the south portal. If you are ever in Edinburgh you can still walk/cycle the old St. Leonards railway tunnel under Holyrood Park which now has a tarmac floor and lighting and is a popular route for cyclists avoiding the city traffic.
