    Kilted Road Trip

I had some things I needed to do last week and decided that an old fashioned road trip would fit the bill and get me out of the house. I took four kilts with me. Two were 8 yard and 2 were 5 yarders for driving and hiking.

I had a business dinner in my Welsh patriot driving kilt on Wednesday in Phoenix. Then I wore my Black Watch 8 yd to a meeting on Thursday and then drove to Show Low (Named after a card game) Arizona. Still in the BW I decided to go to the bar and walked into a sea of Wranglers, and cowboy boots and hats. Everyone was drunk and singing karaoke. I was happy they had Guinness in bottles and scored a # of free drinks thanks to the kilt. Lots of nice young ladies, half my age, had the uncontrollable urge to talk to the old guy in the kilt. I only had to walk to my room and was feeling great. Got up early on Friday for my drive to Albuquerque. I continued w/ the BW 8yd because it was cold at 7000 ft in the mountains. I stopped a lot and got a picture of the VLA (Very Large Array) a radio telescope array in New Mexico.

Here I am in New Mexico w/ the VLA

Then I saw Kathy Lare to go over the measurement and details of my O'Neill
    Tartan kilt.

I changed into my Clarke 8yd and then I went to O'Niel's pub in Albuquerque. I met some more people and a beautiful lady from Norway who ditched her date to stay and talk w/ me. That was a first for me. Another late night well spent.

Saturday I planned on driving to El Paso, Texas and then to Tucson for Another dinner engagement. I ended up finding New Mexico 152 West and driving through Hillsboro and Silver City. It was a great drive.

Just Inside Arizona there is a wonderful place called Texas Canyon.

This is a bedrock mortar where people used to grind Mesquite beans and such.

I had my dinner in Tucson and made it home about 2 am after 1300 kilted miles.

Heh, a common misconception. Deserts can get bloody freezing! I had the same thought when I shipped out to serve in San Angelo, Texas. The first week I nearly froze to death because I left my uniform coat in shipped luggage.

Sounds like you had a great trip! I went to Pennsylvania over the weekend, but didn't have nearly as much fun. The pictures are great; you got to see some beautiful country.

I'd be one of those myself! Behold the magic of the kilt!

Layers, gotta have layers. It's hotter than..... and then turns around and is colder than..... Gets even worse when you get up to altitude....like the high deserts of Colorado.

Thanks again for the pic of my RAF tartan while you were at Kathy's.

I only put on 700 miles driving down and back to Phoenix Friday and Saturday. Driving long distance sure is much more comfy while kilted.

Thanks for the scenery shots too.

Great pics! And kilts are great for all kinds of travel. Had to fly to Chicago last week and flying in a kilt is so much more comfortable that I can't believe that more people don't do it!
