Most of that showy stuff is just trickery; it looks a lot tougher than it is. All three of those guys are great players, which is really the point. Gravity rolls (one handed open rolls) aren't really that difficult with some practice, they just look it to the casual observer. Actually being able to play musically is what is really difficult and the general public doesn't have the proper appreciation for that. You can play a great musical set and then only when you start spinning your sticks do people take notice. I guess that's the ol' peacock effect in action.

Most of that stick trick stuff is older than people realize. Jim Kilpatrick has been doing it since the 70's and Duthart and the Swiss scene before him and the even older jazz guys before that.

how do you know you have a singer knocking on your door?
you can give him the key and open the door for him but he still doesn't know when to come in.

how many female singers does it take to change a light bulb?
just one, she holds up the bulb and the world revolves around her.

how many blues players does it take to change a light bulb?
just one, but all the rest of them will prattle on about how good the old bulb was.

yes i'm a drummer and we get picked on too much so there

And what do you call a bodhran player with a pager?

    "Optimist."

(A friend of mine plays bodhran, and he tells me these jokes.)
