"Clothing, not a costume!"
That's the mantra to bear in mind. Do you need a kilt belt? Do you need a sporran? Do you need hose? If so, hose up, or hose down? Do you need flashes?
When the kilt was worn as a daily garment, I'll bet it was worn with whatever the guy had on hand and felt comfortable with. I'm in favor of continuing that.

I like to wear pushed down hose with sandals with my tartans, but for my UK, Renegade, etc, bare feet and flip flops work just fine.

My husband cares nothing about what he looks like...lol. He just wears low top sneakers and no-show socks. Whatever's comfortable, right?

Topsiders
Where I live it is 80 degrees now and sometimes 90 degrees during the day.
I wear a light weight kilt with Sperry Topsiders, a polo shirt and no socks.
I call it the Kilted Sailor look.

Sandals, flip-flops, or other open shoe are best for the heat. And from another of the Florida rabble, I have to say that I bet topsiders look great with no socks. Never tried that, but I will.

Like UK says, "Form Follows Function."

And didn't William Wallace or Rob Roy dress like this once and a while, sometime, maybe, huh?

Sandals
Just as a matter of taste don't wear socks with sandals, it is a fashon fax pas reguardless of the kilt.
Save the socks for shoes.
But the kilt has been worn with bare feet for longer than there have been kilts.

The great interview with the clothes person for the movie, Rob Roy, spent some time discussing that Rob wouldn't have had socks but she left them in because of North American views.
Wish I could still find that interview online.
Anyway, the rules are all part of the Scottish Fad in England in the 1780's. Scots wore what they wanted. Whose side you on?
Actually, don't anybody go there or the mods will be after me.
Being comfortable with yourself is what makes you cool, unless you're too comfort....never mind.
