Target: for 4 bucks you can probably find some nice charcoal over-the-calf dress socks that will look decent. They'll stay up without garters, which is a good thing---my pair only gives up about 1 inch for a cuff. These, I actually did wear to church on Sunday.
I actually found a pair of OTC black socks in Target in the womens' section. Look by the lingere and there are lots of options. If you have huge calves this may not work, but for me and my skinny legs it was fine (especially at under $5 a pair!).

They won't go all the way up your calf, and they won't be able to fold over but for a good looking pair of grey wool socks get some Thorlo mountain climbing socks. Check your sporting goods or outdoors stores.
