    Jamie,

Forgive my ingorance, but what about the Duin uasal makes it appropriate for all levels of wear? Also, would the ones listed below it also fit into that category?

Just trying to learn a bit more about sporrans, so your help is most appreciated.

I have found that making a sporran is quite easy. You might want to look into it! (if you have the time)

    Derek,
The well defined cantle and nice braided tassels make it well suited for formal wear. The lack of fur and metal cantle make it equally suited for everyday. It looks nice enough that no one should ever raise an eye about it not having a metal cantle in a formal event.

I bought my sporran at the Grandfather games three years ago because it has interlocking hearts (for clan Lockhart) in the metal plate on the flap (not a cantled sporran) for $55, the best I remember. It's black leather, and I can wear it wherever I want. It's not furry or silver, but I like the look of it and the opening is wide enough to get my gorilla hands into. It was made by a man in eastern Tennessee, whose name I don't recall.
The point is, imho, you don't have to shell out a heap of dough to have a serviceable, good-looking sporran. By the way, folks are probably not going to be examining you that closely, anyway. It's your bride's day.

    Congratulations, by the way.

Go to http://www.militaryhighland-dovex.com/sporrn.htm and check out the DIM #0106. If you're interested, contact Saeed Farooq at dovex@cyber.net.pk and ask for a price quote. The last time I talked with him his supplier only had the DIM #0106 in white, but he has had dark brown in the past and I'm waiting for the light brown like in the picture. To give you a comparison, the DIM #0102 was $130.00 US last year. The DIM #0106 is under $50.00 but shipping is around $10.00 and for now he takes Moneygrams via e-mail. Check out "My Highland Dovex Sporran" in the Photo Gallery.

    Derek,

I reccomend the Duin Uasail model, in black leather, to anyone who is looking to invest in a single sporran that can get them through all levels of wear.

Because the sporran has a rounded, open-top cantle (as opposed to the flap kind), and is in black leather, it can easily be worn to a formal event. (Not to mention the excellent hand craftsmanship is readily apparant to anyone who sees or handles the sporran, which also helps with formal wear).

On the other hand, because it is all leather -- no shiney metal bits of bling or glaring white bunny fur here! -- it can also be worn with dressier casual wear. I'd say the sporran is nice enough that it demands something slightly more formal than a t-shirt and sandals, but you could easily wear this sporran with a polo shirt, safari shirt, hiking boots, and certainly more formal day wear.

In an ideal world, you'd have a brown leather sporran for day wear, and a nice fur sporran for evening wear, etc. But not everyone can afford multiple sporrans, and certainly not all up front. So if you have to invest in a single sporran that can pull duty for multiple levels of dress, the black Duin Uasail is ideal. And the craftmanship means it will last a very long time. It could very well be the only sporran you'll ever have to own!

And by the way, there are some other similar styles of sporrans with differet deminsions on that page that would do equally well. The same guidelines as above would apply.

I thought I'd follow up with this image from our Ferguson Britt sporran user's gallery. Fox, who is pictured, is on this forum, though I haven't seen him posting in a while. It shows him wearing a black Duin Uasail for his wedding.

I purchased a PC from them that came with a sporran. Cheap price wise? Hell yes! Good enough quality for a poor first time PC buyer like me? Yep.
Not top of the line obviously but it fits me well enough.
