The main thing you have to consider when looking at a fly plaid in PV (or any other material for that matter) is 'How well will it match the kilt'? If the Ferguson Modern (to pull a tartan name out fo thin air ) kilt you own has a LARGE sett size and a purplish blue, but the PV (or other) material you buy has a small sett and/or a NAVY blue, will it match?

The matching factor is really the thing to consider.

    Love the Pogues Avatar BTW...

i knew that the sett size of the wool tartan from which my kilt was made would not match a stock pv tartan, but i certainly failed to consider that the hues of blue would be so vastly different.

i suppose pv plaids would still suit the lil'uns and in a stretch, the missus, as well.

    thanks, rocky.

Rocky makes a good point (as always), but also be aware that the same tartan pattern from different mills can vary greatly in colour, even if the fiber is the same.

If the weight is similar (say a 13oz wool kilt) and 11oz pv, and the colours are a match, or very close to it, then I think you could pull it off. As far as tartan for the young'uns, as long as the colour match is in the same ball-park, there ought to be no problem.

For instance, I made a hat band out of poly wool scraps left over from a couple of shirts in my family's tartan, and while the colours are not quite as saturated as those of an Ingles Buchan tie in the same tartan, nor is the sett the same (the shirt is at least two or three ounces heavier) the hat and tie work well together. (No I do not wear that hat and tie with my kilt!)
