I could be wrong, but I think the Scotts invented curling about 500 years ago! I wonder why the proper dress for this sport isn't a kilt?
I believe you are correct.
When my brothers and I were in Sterling, we were in this pub that had a large boulder with this jagged handle sticking out of it. It wasnt round by any means. It looked hundreds of years old. The bartender said it was an old curling stone.
It's a great game because it does take athleticism (try sweeping a few rocks) it's fun and exciting but it is also a social game. At our rink we cant wait to get off the ice to go up and hoist a few with the team we just played against.
The pros that play the sport aren't pretentious at all. Our town hosted the mens world championships and the teams could be found in the bar after most games having a couple of pints with the fans.
Can't think of any other sport where this would happen.
Okay...curling...and you can do it in a kilt...very good...
....now...can anyone think of any other events that would be more in keeping with the idea of Highland Heavy Athletics...and you can be serious or funny here...that might make a Winter version of a Highland Games interesting?
Actually there are a few 'backyard' Heavy Athletics games here in the Midwest. A reason to break the cabin fever, get out and crack off the rust and make the best of it.
