Ted, how kind of you to remember. Any outdoor store that sells hiking boots can usually supply you with red laces.

Nice. I could probably make the tassles myself.

I don't get wearing buckles on lacing shoes. It seems like wearing both a belt and suspenders.

I can see how you could view it that way. I just happen to like it and I believe it's been an accepted style for a very long time.

Quite right. It's a popular form of evening shoe for Highlanders or perhaps pipers. Kenneth Macleay's, The Highlanders of Scotland, have many examples of Highland men wearing ghillie brogues with buckles on the toes. And OCRichard posted an old Highland dress catalogue that had the same style of shoe for sale, complete with a photo. I shall make myself a pair at some point with a quality, bench made ghillie brogue made by Loake of England, and sterling silver thistle motif buckles by Inches of Edinburgh. Looking to begin the process in the early fall-will use red laces as well.

You and I have similar tastes.

Good to know that I am not alone! We must keep in contact with eachother. It's always nice to hear advice or criticism with regards to Highland dress, from a 'like mind'.

Yes, you probably could. I am going to do further research to see if red ghillie brouge laces are actually available on the market. Also, my good friend and professional piper, Matt Pantaleoni of St. Louis, Missouri, travels to Scotland every summer to compete on the piping circuit. He is friends will P/M Gordon Walker, and last saw him at the 2009 Bratach Gorm piping competition in London. Matt typically sees him for several competitions whilst in Scotland; I'll be sure to remind him if he could ask Gordon where he got his red laces (and the entire style of shoe for that matter!)! I'm betting he probably made his as well, or had them made for him. I'll keep you posted mate!

    Aye,

    Aye,
That would be awesome thank you!

I am a piper as well...although not at the professional level. I've heard of Matt before, and Gordon Walker happens to be one of my favorite players.
