I chose black because it goes with anything, is sober, and draws little or no attention in the street. Oh yes, and it matches my eyes ;-)
My replies have included:
Its a black check on black tartan
Its just an old skirt I threw on
Oh dear, has the colour washed out?
Clan Black
Anyway, thanks Matt for the info, and thanks chaps for the other comments

When I ordered my solid black kilt from a maker in Scotland, he surprised me by advising that they are a best seller.
I also get asked the same questions when wearing it, so thanks for the answers this thread has provided.

As to responses... I have one simple response to the "why" question- Because I felt like it!! I once had someone as me what clan my black one was... I have to remember the Clan Sith answer! I like that!

Tell them it's dress tartan McGoth, woven in the ancient colors.

When on holiday in Devon I was wearing a black kilt with a white tee shirt and leather bush hat I was informed that it was the uniform of the active wing of the Cornish Nationalists - though whether my leg was being pulled I am not sure.
If a reason to wear a black kilt is required any connection to Cornwall should suffice.
St Piran's Day is the 5th of March, so a black kilt should be worn - St Piran is one of the Cornish saints.

If no one else is going to say it, then I will. If asked what tartan it is, tell them "Black Watch."

Good luck if you try it. There are alot of people who wouldnt be best pleased with that.
I would expect a tap on the shoulder followed by "thats not BlackWatch pal."

A joke my friend, a joke. Just a joke. And not a bad one if I do say so myself- I bet half the questioners would believe it too.
