What would you say?
I recently bought a new all black kilt. All my friends, family, neighbours and acquaintances are used to me in kilts as I am kilted 90% of the time.
However, the all black kilt seems to have thrown them. I'm getting questions such as: "Why black?", "What tartan is that?" (yes, really), "Is that a scottish kilt?" and so on.
I've run out of replies.
What would you say?

They probably are simply not used to the idea of a kilt that is not tartan. Arm yourself with a little education about solid color kilts, so you can let people know when they ask that yes, it is indeed a legitimate and traditional option.

Hi Barry,
I would tell them it was a SAS undercover tartan.

Well, what were those replies? I'm curious too!
Matt's article raises very good points (and I didn't know that before), so certainly you now have a 'valid defense'. But it all honesty, although I would never ask a stranger in person the same question, I'm always curious when I see someone wearing a solid black traditional kilt. With all the tartan choices out there and wonderful colors available, why a plain black kilt?

Thanks for that info, Matt. I have a solid black kilt, just because I like it - and because black is so slimming. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I honestly did not know about any other solid kilts other than the Irish saffron and green kilts. Yet another reason why I love XMTS.

'tis a mourning kilt - for your loss of social graces.
As with the late Johnny Cash, I'm wearing black for the downtrodden of the World.

I've used Clan Destine when wearing my Nightstalker kilt.
