"... more financially mobile", maybe, but education is more than likely not a factor. What you wear is a personal preference, and some people, regardless of their level of education, are incapable of forming a personal opinion. You wear boots because you want to wear boots. Some people wear brogues because they want to wear brogues, and some people wear brogues because some one told them that they should. Don't apologize for doing what makes you feel comfortable, and don't worry about conforming simply to fit in.

I love the classic Doc Marten 8 Eyes (1460) with a casual night kilt outfit.

I too wear my black Bates boots with my kilt unless the situation calls for a more "dressy" look or I am wearing my saffron Stillwater kilt. In the latter case I will wear my combat boots I purchased from bootcampaign.com

At Highland games where there may be muddy patces, I wear hiking boots.

Exactly, just as I would at any other muddy event held in a large field, whatever my other attire. The ones I presently have are not capable of being polished up. They have the wrong type of finish. I don't see that as a problem, though.
If I ever get invited to a formal kilted event I will likely wear brogues (non ghillie, LOL!), although I don't think I have a serviceable pair at present, but should probably get some. The jacket would be a bigger problem, although I do have a semi-formal sporran that I've never worn.

I wear my greasy brown "for life" 1460's with the kilt all the time... actually was motivated to get them after getting the sporran shown here.

I recently started wearing my combat boots every so often (original issue, boot camp 1984) and have grown to really like the look.
This was a HUGE step for me. I have always held kilts in the same regard as a dress uniform, and for me to wear one without hose and flashes just felt wrong somehow. I always liked the look of guys wearing boots, but couldn't bring myself to do it. When I finally did, I was uncomfortable for about 30 minutes, like I was somehow dishonoring the kilt. Keep in mind that the first time I strapped on a kilt, I had no apprehension whatsoever. Dressing "down" was hard for me, but I'm slowly loosening up, thanks to this forum and my wife.
If I had a PC jacket and fly plaid, I'd probably wear them everywhere, (which explains why my wife isn't too hot on me getting them.. she knows me too well) but I'm now really digging the boots.

Boots aren't at all offensive...but...

RayMc...like just about everybody else on here, I'd say "If you want to wear boots with your kilt, go for it". As others have said, if you're wearing boots, you can even get away with scrunched down boot socks rather than kilt hose for a casual look.
My reason for posting was two words in your original post that made me cringe..."Jacobite Shirt". Please retire it (or burn it) and wear a button down shirt (long or short sleeve)...or just a tshirt would be an improvement. I don't know how it started, but those things are the most historically inaccurate, costumey, cliche item of "Scottish" clothing going. Almost as bad as the 1950s-60s fringed buckskin/suede jacket supposedly worn by the likes of Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett.
I don't mean to offend...but that particular item of clothing is a far worse than any pair of boots could ever be, in my opinion.
