I saw a documentary yesterday which showed HM the Queen at the Derby in '07. It's pretty cool that you and her hang out at the same place.

Thanks all for the kind words.

Great to see the Dutch Friendship tartan at such an elegant event - you shoulda won a best dressed prize this year too. Like the darker orange kilt hose, mine are a bit bright...nice touch with the red flashes too. Ain't nothin' like a confident man in a quality kilt.

Re: A Day at the Races--Breeder's Cup 2011, Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
Got a lot of looks, too many to count requests for photos, a lot of compliments, and one idiot who said "Irish, huh?" to which I responded, "No, American".
First, let me say you look wonderful! Well done!
But I'm not so sure the fellow deserves the title of idiot for asking if you were Irish. To be fair, your attire was primarily green and orange, and could easily be reminiscent of Irish national colours. I'm sure we're all familiar with the saffron kilt worn with a green jacket, and it's easy to see how even a fairly-well-educated person could see your outfit and want to ask if it was Irish. It does appear very similar, even if the colours are not exactly in the same places.
On a totally unrelated note, I couldn't help but notice the drink in your hand. Is that a smaller than normal cup, or do you just have huge hands???

I'd have thought her ponies preferred grass... Never will get used to seeing dirt tracks...

I think hers do prefer grass, but she left them at home during her trip.

First thank you for the kind compliment.
Second, had you been standing beside me when this beer-sodden soul with his arm around his equally beer-sodden girlfriend/wife accosted me by turning me around abruptly with a firm yank on my shoulder, followed by his as previously stated remark, you would have been as sure as I that this was not a person with any knowledge whatsoever of kilts, let alone which celtic nationalities wore what colors or patterns. His comment, and my reply, which were both uttered in a crowded beverage line, brought sequential guffaws and cackles of laughter from all within earshot, followed by a "deer in the headlights" look from the fellow who also cocked his head to one side, kind of like the RCA Victor dog on the old record labels, clearly confused as to my reply to his remark and the surrounding crowd's response. He and his lady friend simply turned and wandered off quizically looking at one another and muttering something unintelligible from my vantage point. Several in the crowd voiced the "idiot" comment before I could even think it, then kindly complimented my attire as appearing obviously traditionally Scottish.
Third, the drink (a particularly well made Bloody Mary) was a pretty standard sized cup, albeit slightly smaller than the typical ballgame beer cup. But yes I do have big hands, albeit actually small for my 6'5" stature. I had actually bought two but succumbed to my dire thirst along my long route back to my box seat, so was left with just the one when my brother called for me to stop for a picture just in front of the box.
