Here is the 1st seal skin sporran. I haven't put the tassels on any of them yet (still waiting for the metal tassel parts to come in the mail).

Here is a picture of the same one without the flash:

Re: Seal skin sporrans
Not sure how someone imported a sealskin sporran from Scotland. Not saying it didn't happen, but within my uderstanding of the MMA I don't think it was legal to have done. Happy to be wrong on that.
I think the OP got his jacket under exemption 2:

Sealskin jacket = traditional native article. Also hats, gloves, pants and mittens. Sealskin sporran = NOT traditional native (Aleut, Eskimo, Athabascan) craft.
Acquiring a traditional craft from a legitimate native = definitely legal.
repurposing a traditional native craft into a sporran for personal use = grey area
repurposing native craft into sporran for a business profit = definite felony
Nice looking sporran Haxton.

Re: Seal skin sporrans
Interesting reading indeed... I didn't really know the states were so sticky over a seal pelt.
I've hunted seals nearly every year since I was a kid. Many families in my part of Newfoundland get one every year or two for meat (not to mention a seal fishery). As a by product, I've had the pelt made into sealskin mitts and they're awesome!
That Sporran you have above there lad is looking great too! Be sure to post a couple pictures of the final product =) Hard to tell from the pictures, but is it harp seal?

Wow, I just wanted to share my leather working with my X-marks clan- had no idea this would happen. I am sorry for even starting this thread. Mods, feel free to delete all this.

Re: Seal skin sporrans
Just so everyone knows here, I have a legitimate receipt from an Alaskan Native who has a permit to hunt and to sell seal skin products. He has told me I may do what I want with it once it is mine. I can modify WHATEVER I own and it is not a grey area- this country is yet free. I am not trying to sale anything. I went through all the proper paperwork and customs with my sporran from Scotland, and I have not done anything wrong. I am sorry if you disagree.

I could care less about the legalities and frankly it's none of my business. That being said well done on the sporrans, they look great!
