I'm sorry, I just don't have that much compassion for her. It's more like, imagine if you were a 1950's era husband and your wife had just announced that she was wearing a pair of pants to a dinner/other social outing. One comparison shows how she feels, the other is more accurate. The surprise in any of these situations is wrong, but the kilt situation and the pants situation are the parallels. In my not so humble opinion, any woman who tries to keep a man crammed into pants needs to be laced into a corset and a tight fitting dress until she remembers the trouble that women had getting pants for women to be socially acceptable.

I don't think I quite made the point I was trying to. I wasn't trying to say that he shouldn't wear a kilt because his wife doesn't want him to, but that he went about it the wrong way.

So ummm, if perhaps she shares your faith you could point out that the focus of worship for your faith was a guy who also enjoyed the freedom of unbifurcated garments....

Wow, thanks brothers. This was a quick response from you and and a pleasant show of comeraderie. My wife just walked in this very minute and I told her of your advice and support. Today went well. After church I told her that I was sorry that I shocked her and she said she was embarrassed (for her, not me, o one with balls of brass) and that I really should have been sensitive to this. I apologized and acknowledged her reality (I do a bit of psychoanalysis, so she's used to this) and apologized again. The rest of the day developed well between us and she responded positively to me just now telling her that I have 23 brothers who all responded that I erred and should apologize and bring her along slowly. Ultimately she almost cracked a smile telling me that there were 23 other numbskulls who wore these things. Her tone of voice was such that I think I will definitely be bringing this along slowly around the house and in the yard to start.

I will have my son take a picture and post it soon. Thanks and peace to you all, Chris

Welcome, Chris. Sorry you messed up.

I have no advice since I know nothing about women.

    Good luck.

Yeah but that's OK because I think women know nothing about women. After all as soon as a man comes close to learning the "rules" women go and change the rules!

Welcome to XMarks from Ontario Canada. I hope you and your wife can find common ground regarding your kilt wearing. And when you do please share your findings with the rest of us in the same boat.

In one of my favorite movies, Dance Me Outside, Adam Beach's character Frank Fencepost, keeps asking everyone, "Do you think women are thinkin' somethin'?"

There's a lot more than 23 numbskulls who wear these things...but one thing that I've found on this forum is a healthy sensitivity to other's difficulties both with the kilt and with most other of life's little landmines. Super that you were able to break the ice and talk. I've still got friends who find this kilt thing difficult after eighteen odd months of part time kilt wearing. Hopefully the initial shock will wear off and your wife will come to appreciate the kilt. I think that very few of us who decide to seriously wear the kilt do it for frivolous reasons; there's some good reason why we decide that it's time to get un-bifurcated and it's a personal statement of one kind or another. It's difficult when we make this statement and those near and dear to us don't seem to understand or accept it from the git-go but have faith and give it time.

That is a great movie, I haven't seen it in a long time.

Wives are absolutely wonderful creatures—just don't surprise them that way. Give her time. My wife and I often go out in our highland dress to supper or movies She has often commented on how the women smile at me when I'm wearing such a manly garment. Love her, she'll come around.
