Wow, thanks Ron. Haven't seen one of those since my 'Sea Scout' days many moons ago. They disbanded the Sea Scouts in my neck of the woods second year in and made us join the regular scouts. I went once. Boy did I look out of place in my navy blues and my white hat amongst all the park rangers!

(also all the guff about it being a piece of uniform, and illegal to wear it yadda yadda BS rumblings, you know what i mean)
Also, what is weird, is the chin stay (strap under chin) is even sown on incorrectly, he couldnt wear it properly if he wanted to...
The blue Jean collar has two stripes? mental. (costume)
The dancer shown on the first page of this thread is not representing any navy in the world. He's just supposed to be a generic sailor doing a sailor dance.... However, he does have a number of technical errors according to the SOBHD dress code. 1) the hat as I have previously noted, and 2) the collar must have 3 stripes. Btw, the collar according to the SOBHD must either be navy blue or denim and either type can be worn with both the navy blue or white costume.
The chin strap is there to hold the hat on during the dance. If you know of a better way please share.

The hornpipe is quite old and I find it quite funny that Highland dance has preserved it. We also preserve the Cakewalk, probably the only dance organization to do so.

No, that was the proper costume for the Hornpipe.
Jack Daw was commenting that he'd seen dancers in kilts wearing the hornpipe hat which is NOT the proper costume for either the hornpipe or highland dances.

On the whole I'm inclined to go with the nay sayers on this one - but there are no rules and maybe it would be appropriate in a casual setting where you wish to announce your sea going tendencies.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

Thanks guys,
Who'd have dreamed the feedback on a hat?

Do you mean I've convinced you to go for it - or you've bowed down to the dictatorship of the majority?

I have listened to the feedback I asked for and decided to keep my souvenir from my youth, but not invest in a new cap that would fit me - lest I accidently don it while kilted.

Now, were you to wear a white canvas kilt, you would not be totally out of line, as they were worn by seamen back in the late 1600 to early 1800s. You just need really long hose with horizonal stripes and an eyepatch. And maybe a parrot.

Staples? sorry couldnt resist.
Something that i have just realised about the way he is wearing his hat, they are not round, and can only really be worn one way (fore and aft to use terms). that would explain why it sits so high on that chaps head(must be uncomfortable as well). if he turned it around it would sit better and the tally would be front on and then all he would need to do is re sew the chin stay, and he wouldnt look like a...well ill leave that bit out.
Navy blue or white (navy blue must be a costume colour or an american rig), commonly referred to as summer (and or tropical)(white) and winter (black - or blue for yanks)...
all those years of getting told how to wear the uniform correctly, and then seeing these kind of pics, nearly makes me eyes bleed.

Ron, as an ex jack, I emplore you not to wear this with anything apart from a navy uniform, and if you are really keen for one, tell me what size swede you have, and ill mail you a new one, as i have cough a few spares cough...
I'd be with the sheepoeple on this one.
