Easy solution: Buy a pair of coveralls and a pair of shorts to change into when you go into the auto class. Problem solved. If need be, just make the trip out to the car to store the kilt away, if there isn't a safe place in the building to put your kilt.
Frequently, after class, I either find myself visiting a friend's house to do work on either my car or one of his, or I find myself @ the wrecking yard. I don't bother with the coveralls, but I do have a car shirt (essentially a junky t-shirt that I don't mind letting grease and grime land on) and a pair of shorts handy when I plan to do dirty stuff. I also have nitrile gloves handy, so I can keep my hands clean.

As to jobs that require a 'dress code'. They can not really control what you wear into work or what you wear home from work (or can they???). I have always worn whatever I wanted to work, changed, worked, changed back and left the work. They are paying you for your work time, not your living time. When they pay me to live and dress a certain way after work, then they can say what I wear after work.
I had a job once where they did not know I was a biker when they hired me (it was none of their business) and they were so shocked when I drove up before work, walked in and showed my badge, went into the bathroom and changed (and shaved) and came out to work. My boss tried to give me in trouble and all he did was get himself in trouble and get fired because of it.

One of the autobody students who liked what he saw through my loading door and took my classes said he got one of his work suits things at goodwill, and after his mother decided he shouldn't be wearing one with the name "Sarah" (or what ever female name was on it), she bought him one at one of the hardware stores (Osh? maybe), so it may not be too hard to come by.

I'm almost afraid to ask what that is all about. Can it be explained on a child-friendly forum?

Let's just say that whiskey makes uglies look pretty, and velcro gloves stick to wool.

School Free Dress Day
Scooby had indicated he would wear his kilt to school on free dress day(they normally have a uniform). Today was the day, he didn't tell me when I asked and he missed it. He believes he can wear it for "Rainbow Day" tomorrow, also a free dress day of sorts. His class has a presentation tomorrow, we'll have to see what he decides.
If he kilts, I'll wear one too for the presentation; I'll have to change when I get to work. I work in a dirty(I get trousers filthy daily) and dangerous space. Unlike crboltz, I won't wear a kilt in the scene shop or warehouse; company policy against shorts AND personal choice.
I did have a facebook friend and customer ask me to let him know if I ever showed up kilted at work so he could come see.

Where's that PM?!?! I may have to take you up on that drink some time. I do want to go to Missouri some day- other than passing through on my way to Ohio.

Actually, I kilt on my non-scene shop days... I've worked at places that have a no shorts in the scene shop policy. I don't because they can't seem to get the air handling set correctly, (the building is improperly zoned) and they tend to sacrifice the scene shop. I ask my students to show up dressed in layers so they can adjust to whatever the temperature has to be that day.
Kilts are great but they cost to much to get messy.
