I think most of you are way over thinking this one. Most people in the USA have never seen a kilt in person, and if they have its been on a pipe band marching by. They couldn't tell a cheap poly kilt from the most expensive bespoke one, and don't even know that the two types exist, let alone the other modern variants. Like Matt, when I've heard this question, it was really a variant of "the question."
