I think some of you are thinking in terms of "saxon" dress, in which a black dinner jacket (or midnight blue) is the only choice. Highland dress is not fettered to the same requirements and standards. Think outside the box here.
I happen to have a wife, a mother, and a great deal of friends, yet when I dress for the evening (i.e. for black tie or white tie events) and I am wearing the kilt, I put on either a navy blue velvet doublet, a green velvet doublet, or a tartan doublet. Soon I hope to put on a deep brown velvet doublet. I have a black 'regulation' doublet made of vicuna, but I haven't worn it in years.

I don't care how impractical it is, I want a Montrose in either deep claret or inky blue velvet.
Closed doublets are very flattering for a certain build.

Unless I'm badly mistaken there are pictures of JSFMACLJR around to prove that an alternative color can be a brilliant choice. Though not everyone has the eye or the presence to pull it off, he has, I have on occasion, and certainly
someone has some photos (of him and others, not of me). Just doublecheck before going out the door, as it can be a train wreck if you're not one of those folk, or even if you're just having an "off" night.

Well this is my current favorite..

I love looking at the photo's on this forum and many, many of you would look stunning wearing this.
Err even with a fedora!
I cannot afford one at the mo as they have to be made to measure, but if I win the lottery, this would be my first purchase.

I went out on a limb a while back and decided to get a formal doublet made up in Harris Tweed, usually a very informal cloth.
I've had a lot of fun with it!

That does indeed look very smart.

I have a Montrose (double breasted) doublet, and no one--absolutely no one--looks better at a formal ball than me when I have the lace and my breachan feile all piled up with a fur sporran. Given--it's not often that I have a chance to wear it--but when I do, I look good. Even for me!
But it is not very practical. On the other hand, I wanted one, I got it, and I'm glad I did. I didin't buy it for practicality--that way lies boredom and denim--I bought it for looks, and like others above, that's what I wanted! I haven't worn it in several years, but the next time I do, no one will look better.
I would agree with davidlpope et al, though. A regulation doublet is a fine purchase and much more versatile; white or black tie, it works. You guys can wear blues and greens and other colors; I'll stick with black. I let my kilt do the talking in regards to colors.

I can't make Greenville this year since they scheduled it for the same weekend as Rolling Thunder, i.e., Bike Week at Panama City Beach. We're riding the Harleys down. Think Wild Hogs. My buddy and I are louder than we are wild!
I do hope to see you somewhere else before Stone Mountain. Keep me posted on any games you intend to greace. Maybe Maryville Games or Blairsville? Let me know if you'll be about.
