    Re: First Kilt Advice

I'll chime in with my two coppers and the disclaimer that I'm not a full-time kilt wearer nor have I been at it the decades some here have been.

What were big helps to me when i was shopping for my first kilt (other than a band kilt from two decades ago), were the articles posted on both the STM and USAK websites. Then I used the search button here to find questions i had that others had asked previously. Not every answer agreed due to personal opinions, but it gave me a lot of information to base my own opinion on.

Thirdly, I agree on finding a kiltmaker as close as possible and buying directly from the maker.

My own kilt wound up being a Premier from Rocky and Kelly at USAK and I'm extremely happy with the result

I like mine right at the top of the kneecap, by the way, with the hose a few inches below the bottom the the kneecap.

    Re: First Kilt Advice

Yes, it is the length that's being a real bugger for me. I've felted my knee at different points, from the felted mark on my waist, and am fretting over half-inches now. I also put on my band kilt which is too long and try to eyeball it on how much to take off.

I have ended up going through the picture sections here, as well as taking in the breadth of opinions, finding what I like.

I'm 6', thin, and hoping 24 1/2 inches is high enough... it's a little above the middle of the kneecap. I would go higher, but I just don't know how it will fall when put on.

That last part is awfully specific. I was just throwing that out there just in case someone had my rough dimensions and wanted to pipe up. ;-)

Put on your band kilt and post a picture here. In general I think you will find a concensus in our opinions.

Great idea! I'd be so grateful.

I have a couple already. I was trying to find the best angles for this. This kilt is 26".

One thing to consider is that with a heavy weight tank the kilt will tend to ride a little low from the weight alone. A kilt to the top of my kneecap often sits around mid kneecap anyhow.

    An astute observation!

Indeed, I'm trying to think about all these variables. It ends up being more an art than a simple task of measuring.

While my pictures are awaiting moderation, I hear every so often about asking for any extra cloth used to make the kilt. Does any one do this? I mean, it couldn't hurt to have it to make extra flashes or something, but it's no big deal. I was just curious.

Looks to me like that kilt comes right about the bottom of the knee. Completely acceptable, but I prefer mine between the top and middle of the knee.

Indeed, this was the closest my Quartermaster had to fit me from our limited stock. It's good to know it's acceptable, I get self-conscious about it (and that belt is fully functional!).

This may all be hard to see but the first white line up (forgive my layman speak) from the selvedge is an inch and a half. There's a horizontal orange stripe between that and the second white line up. That orange line is about 2'' up.

I'm getting nervous going higher than an inch and a half. I almost think 2'' would be too high and 1'' not enough. I think my personal Goldilocks preference is for a little knee covered, falling above or at the middle. If I go with 1 1/2'', do you all think I'll be okay?

I certainly don't want it as long as my band kilt though, that much I do know!

    Re: First Kilt Advice

Is that sitting at your "natural" waist or where you wear your jeans? Of course, all this is personal preference, but it looks like it might be a bit lower down than your natural waist...which, in turn, would cause the length to be lower on the knee than otherwise.

However, if you have that kilt where you want the waist measurement, that is good to know and just be sure you are ordering the length accordingly.

Nice pictures, btw. Just also remember, a 1/2 inch one way or the other REALLY is not going to be a big deal...
