I don’t have this problem, at all. I will say “Jeg går i kilt” [I go in kilt] = I’m wearing (a) kilt or “Jeg kan lide at gå i kilt” [I like to go in kilt] = I like wearing (a) kilt.
In Danish we simply don’t use an article before the noun in phrases like that. So, now you have probably got your very first lesson in Danish.

I wear the kilt and the kilt is good.

I have to agree with GG, Danish is a far more sensible language about the whole thing. I don't say that because I happen to be Danish also, but because I really believe it.

I believe that's true of Nordic languages in general (though I don't know about Finnish which is somewhat different.)

And plural rules are easier adding -er to make a plural and -ene to make a plural with the definite article.

    Kilter - kilts
    Kiltene - the kilts

Kilties, I believe that we are at an impasse. Both "the kilt" and "kilts" appear to be accepted plurals for the article of clothing called a kilt.
For myself I will use "kilts" unless speaking with dedicated kilties to avoid sounding pompous (even though I believe the "the kilt" is most grammatically correct).

In my ever so humble opinion, I believe the following statements to be true:

I wear the kilt. (I choose to wear the national dress of Scotland and free-minded men the world over.)

I wear a kilt everyday. (The kilt is my chosen mode of attire.)

I wear kilts. (I am lucky enough to own many and I wear them all.)

I go about kilted. (See number one above)

I am a member of the kilt revolution. (I have chosen the kilt to experience comfort and freedom!)

I like the kilt. (I hate pants!)

I like kilts. (So many lovely tartans.)
