There are plenty of options out there. I have just prepared a presentation on District Tartans, and to illustrate the point I found 16 district tartans that I have an affiliation with either by birth, ancestors, or having lived there. That does not include any clan tartans. I currently have 2 1/2 (jonesing one with Matt Newsome) so 13 more to lust over and keep on my list of tartans to get sometime.

I'm sure you've found the same. Keep in mind that DC Daghlish will do kilt lengths as custom runs. I know Matt Newsome, Barb Tewksbury, and Kathy Lare have all made kilts from special order 16 oz. cloth from them. It'll cost a little more, but worth it in the end, IMO.
Lochcarron stocks a 13 oz Young weathered. Edgar stocks Young modern in 13 oz, as well. And Lochcarron offers the Young modern in 16 oz. Just FYI.

I am one of those that (for the time being) will not wear a clan tartan with which I don't hava a connection. I don't have any issues with someone else doing it, but I won't myself. For me, part of the fun of wearing the kilt is the clan connection I have to the tartan. It definitely makes me feel more connected, if you will, to the kilt I have on. You certainly can't say that with a pair of jeans. Besides, I'm rather glad I've chosen to limit myself in such a way because there are so many fantastically beutiful clan tartans to choose from that if I didn't stick to my clan or a district tartan, I'd be overwhelmed by all my options.

The Lochcarron page doesn't show it in their Braeriach 13 oz. line, only the Reiver 10 oz. Perhaps they're just not updated? That one will have to be had someday.

Right. I don't see the point in wearing a tartan that one is not related to by family or by district or occupation. What is the point? Wearing groovy colors?
To me it is like one's name. Would you start using another one only because you found it more aesthetically appealing than your own? For me wearing some one else's tartan would be like flying false colors, pretending to be something or some one I am not.

It's all romantic Victorian nonsense. And by the time that tartans began to be...literally...assigned to specific clans, the clan system was nothing but a romantic fiction itself.
....
Well, no, not all tartans by a long shot.
E.g., the Morrison red tartan dates to before Culloden and the proscription of wearing tartans.
And what if tartans were developed after the clan system was no longer the mode of living of most Scots? Clans still were, and are, legal entities in Scotland.
Is there a time that something must be in existence before one can wear clothing associated with it? If so, most baseball caps and starter jackets would not be allowed.

I thought about it further tonight. For the sake of my wallet, my bank account, and my credit cards, I am going to retain my outlook and wear only universals and my clan (if I can ever find it where I can afford it). Whereas I see and like others, I'm just gonna keep it simple, and keep it meaningful to me.
That being said, if I ever win the lottery, all bets are off. ;)

USA Kilts has the Galbraith in PV... about as affordable, in a decent kilt, as you'll ever get.

the same form me: while I'm waiting for the affiliation to the Clan Mackay society I wear universal tartans.

While I pretty much only own tartans to which I have some connection,(Macneil and Gordon) I have nothing against those who wear other clan's tartans. I also own an Irish National and a Stillwater heavyweight in Black Shadow Tartan. My advice, if you want to wear a clan's tartan, email the clan website and number one ask for information about the clan and tartan, Then ask for permission to wear it. Very few will say no.
