I agree that a poofy, costume shirt is perfect for certain type of events as exemplified by the leverage Zardoz seems to get out of them at Renn Faire's. If someone wants to wear one down to the pub, that is their prerogative, but I certainly wouldn't do it. The problem is when people think they are an acceptable alternative to proper attire for a dress coded event, like wearing one to a formal Burns Supper

By my humble (and twisted) accounting:
Kilt: Swish + Swagger = Swoon
Ghillie Shirt: Moist!
No wonder I think I'm a sexy beast! (Runs and attempts to hide while laughing way too loudly)
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

My wife gave me one as a gift which I have never warn because I don't really think it looks right with a kilt. However, after reading a certain post in this thread (I will leave it up to the rabble to try and figure out which that could be) I will have to revisit this particular issue.

I like 'em. I think they're very comfortable. I own a half dozen of them - white, black, and some colors.

I like Ghillie shirts. They are comfortable and go nicely with certain kilt outfits, and it is fun to get them in various colors. If anyone looks askance at me wearing them, they have never been rude enough to tell me so or even to give evil glances. I have received "nice outfit" several times when wearing them. The very cheap ones don't look so good--but, IMHO, neither do very cheap kilts (of the same quality and sold by the same vendors). A nice quality Ghillie shirt looks good with a quality kit, as I see it.

I don't like the ones made from synthetic fabric that are sold by many middlemen vendors.
I do like the ones made from cotton. I like how loose and cooling they are in HOT weather....and I like the sort of "pirate/bodice ripper cover" look of them which I like to think might work with the ladies....one can hope...

Personally , I just wear a form fitting t-shirt with my jeans or kilt for that effect .

I have one in cotton, natural color (a gift from a clanswoman that she made herself). I have worn it with my kilt for piping at the local Boar's Head Festival. I have worn it with my old jeans and a leather vest for a 'hippie' costume. Otherwise, it hangs in my closet until the next event.
Not a big fan of wearing it for anything other than costume wear.

I've got one but I've never worn it. They are a little voluminous for me although I don't have an issue with other people liking and wearing them. I never was much of a piratical type although I do agree that venue is probably the key. Obviously I haven't found the right one.
I might add that they are pretty standard amongst the Scots for pub night casual (Kilt wear) in Scotland. It does seem to be regarded as the proper going out for a pint "Kilt shirt" and somewhere between a Rugby shirt and a Kilt jacket and tie. I'm a bit more of a Rugby top kind of a chap meeself, for that kind of occasion anyways.

My shirts don't fit like they were made by Omar the Tent Maker, as I seem to be built at the larger end of the range of body sizes intended for an XL-sized shirt. So that helps a lot, I think. If I were 2 stone, or 30 pounds lighter, that might not be the case.
