Amen to all the above. I get lots of compliments, and questions, usually about the tartan and the associated clan, and why it is not the same as the clan with a similar name (MacLaine of Lochbuie, and MacLean of Duart) As far as worrying about what people think, I think this bumper sticker I saw sums it up; "Where are we going? Why am I in this handbasket?"

I'm not nervous at all (having worn the kilt for about 5 years now). My wife had a problem with the supposed attention that it brought to her when we were out. I have been having a concern, now that my daughter is in school. I dont want her to get made fun of because I wear the kilt.

There are some other ways to "stick out" and you don't need to be kilted. I think it also depends on country and the "local" culture. In USA, Canada and some other Lands, there are many people with Celic heritage (or at least much more informed), this is less "sticking out". In some other counties, the level of ignorance can be even higher.

There is nothing more natural looking (and sexy) than a man in a kilt! it makes even the wimpiest man look hunky! I love it. I attend festivals where there are lots of men walking around in their kilts. My girlfriends and I enjoy every minute of it.

Keep wearing them! wear them to the park, wear them to the store!! you wont catch me making any wise cracks! no siree!

I wouldn't be nervous at all, especially with the way the youth dresses now a days. My wife and I see young men and boys wearing shirts that a very large individual would swim in, pants six inches below their rears, or all dressed in black with eye liner on and metal spikes on random pieces of leather wrist things. Sometimes, all of the above. Then we will see young girls, not even of legal age, wearing clothes that would expose even Victoria's best kept Secrets. What I am getting at is that if these young men, women, boys, and girls can step out of their homes dressed in such ways and not be embarrassed (or their parents let them out that way) by the way they look, then you should not be embarrassed or nervous by being dressed nicely.

My first time wearing a kilt in public was kind of a trial by fire. I had just picked up my first UK in Seattle, and went to a Metallica concert the next day. Believe me, it takes a fair bit of self-confidence to walk into a stadium full of headbangers in a skirt. I was nervous inside, but I think wearing a kilt projects confidence even if you don't feel it.

So cool and ballzy! So, how was the reception with the Metallica crowd? I would imagine that you fit in just fine with a UK.
