I don't have any kilts that even have belt loops, so I voted don't use them at all.

Belt loops? Why, for belts of course! 98% of my kilts have loops. My sporran straps sit quite happily just below the loops and therefore the belt and, if worn at the correct height, the sporran itself never slips - it can also be quickly moved to one side or the other without the buckle and keeper becoming caught up in the loops (which happens if the strap is worn through them!).
When I first began wearing the kilt, back in the early 1950s, I made enquiries of as many Highland Dress retailers as possible and studied photographs in their catalogues and elsewhere - there were no internet sites to consult! The advice I was given in this connection and the evidence I saw for myself was that the belt went through the loops and the sporran strap remained outside. This was also, as far as I could tell, how they were worn with uniforms on military parades.
No way would I ever feed a sporran strap through those loops!
Take care,
Ham.

I tried it with nothing through the loops this weekend. That works just fine, too, though I'm not changing my vote.

Both or belt although I have gotten away from a sporran belt and wear the newer front loops with chain to hang my sporran. It's more comfortable and easier to work with in casual situations. I made mine from an old sporran belt - clipped the chain short to fit, cut, folded and riveted the belts to make belt loops and I'm done.

I sometimes use the loops (if they are there) for the belt, sometimes not, but in almost forty years of wearing the kilt, I've never put the sporran strap through the loops. Not right, not wrong, but just how I learned it when I bought my first kilt from an old Scottish gentleman.

I can't believe how indignant and self righteous some people get over this argument. People are getting far too worked up over something that all comes down to one person's choice - If I want to put my belt or sporran strap or both through my belt loops (if I have them), that it should be my choice.
No one jumps up and down and says that cars were driven for year without power steering, heaters or inertia reel seat belts, so does that mean we shouldn't have them in modern cars? It's an insult to history?
I think we all need to lighten up, and stop telling people "You're doing it WRONG!!" when you see them wearing a kilt made our of PV or acrylic or denim or leather, and their belt is going THROUGH THE LOOPS (Oh......the humanity!), and they're wearing a flat cap (Oh, just shoot them now........put them out of their misery please!!), and they're wearing boots (Ugh, now I just feel physically sick...........).........
We wear these things because we like them and we enjoy the comfort and style ..... not because we're conforming to an 18th century costume like the ones we see so often in the pictures posted here.

Hold your horses here one second, As far as I can see no one said either way was wrong this is a poll to see what people do Personaly I dont use them but thats my preferance I dont csre what you or anyone else does unless I see you doing something obviously daft (IE pleats at the front, in which case I'll have a quiet word) then its your life.
About this 18th century sterio type I wouldnt think theres many people on these forums who would agree with you. I can only speak from my experiances but I dont think I could pass about being from any time but this one what with my boots scrunched hose and leather jacket.
And the flat cap/ white hose thing is just a little banter so lighten up
Just my opinions of course.

I was voiceing my opinion...and not stating a fact or barking an order for all to adhere to. It's what I do when I wear a kilt. Everyone else is free to do what they want to. My opinion is based primarily on advice from my kilt maker. I personally put value in this advice, because he is someone I consider and expert.
I mentioned that if the loops were meant for the belt that they would be found all the way around, and not just in the back. This was more tongue-in-cheek...but the more I think about it, there may be some truth to it.
