I can't remember the first time it was so long ago. But, just about any place is good. Practice a bit at home and then just go out.

I go back to walking the dog, it was my first thing I did, plus it's good for you, good for the dog. My second was out dancing at a local VFW the local GLBT rents for monthly dances. Every loved it, was shocked to know I made it myself as it looked very professional, and I got an order to make one off my first visit. Like everyone says, it's all about confidence. Just like the guys who go to Walmart the first time, imagine wearing it with your cowboy buddies who have never seen you in anything but wranglers and on a horse. Even some of the lesbians were inpressed and if you can get one of THEM interested in anything remotely resembling a skirt, that's saying something! (my name, flagracer, comes from my best rodeo event)

My first public outing will be this weekend as part of my marching band on Sat night at a dance and Sunday at a parade. I hopefully won't have a chance to be shy....
But on this past Christmas Eve my wife hosted her annual friends dinner and I made it a kilted dinner (along with a friend of ours). It was a blast and I hope to buy a couple of cheaper kilts for next year attendees.

irony
though odd, the first place I went with mine is to a friends house that lives in North City, in a bad, bad, BAD neighborhood. After going kilted in the ghetto, those drunken frat boys and they're comments seem like ants under a shoe.
