Haggis hurling in Calgary!
Just read this in today's newspaper...
Gordon Sinclair, owner of Gordon's Fine Meats, once again honours Scotland's national bard, Robbie Burns, with his annual haggis toss across the mighty Bow River.
The toss is set for this Sunday, the 23rd, at 12:30pm.
Sinclair always improves upon the mechanism used to hurl the haggis across the river. Sinclair says customers of his built this years machine, a trebuchet, which is a catapult-type device used to hurl heavy missles like rocks, or in this case, a haggis.
"It's a fun thing. This year we're confident it will work."
The event starts with a march to the river. The parade, led by the Calgary Police Pipe Band and a contingent of wenches, warriors, and anyone else who wants to join in, will kick off at 12:30 pm from the Prince's Island city parking lot adjacent to Memorial Drive.
-----------------------------------------------------
I plan to attend the event, and encourage any of the local Calgary kilties to join in as well. I've never been to one of these before, and apparently they've never managed to get the haggis completely across the river. Should be fun!

Oh, I recall hearing about that on the CBC a few years back (being thouroughly confused about what a 'haggis' was at the time). I shall let all my calgarian friends know for sure.

That sounds like a fun event. I wish we have something like that here in Vancouver. Although I am planning to go to the Gung Haggis Fat Choy Highland game next Friday.

Al,
Having been to Calgary many times, I have a very vivid mental image of this haggis flying across the Bow. Is the Eau Claire Market doing anything in conjuction with the event? Robbie Burns day at Joey Tomatoes?

Haggis hurling...
I heard about this a couple of years ago on Michael Feldman's program on NPR...ironically on the morning of our Burns Supper. I would love to actually see it "in person"!
Of course, many Highland games now have "Haggis Hurling" (by hand) as part of their line-up, usually for the lassies. It can be a real hoot!
Cheers,
T.

I have heard of the event also, sort of wish that I could be a participant.
