    The Kilt in Winter

When people ask "Isnt it cold?" I gotta wonder. Its not like I'm walking sentry duty or sleeping in the trenches.

For most of us "outside" occurs in the parking lot.

How much actual exposure to the elements do you all have on a daily basis?

It really does not bother me, and I let people know that I am plenty warm. Of course I prefer it a little bit on the cooler side as opposed to the warm side of the temperature. I am able to keep my youthful looks

Been doing winter hikes (4-6 miles) kilted in temps from 35 to 40 degrees F. Some wind and rain. Not cold yet. In fact, when I come in from a hike and take the kilt off it often feels very warm to the touch. Go figure. Do wear my heavier weight kilts.

I've gone snowshoeing in sub-0 F weather. I've been backpacking where I spend all day, every day, for weeks on end in the snow, sleet, and rain. I have never been colder in a kilt than I would have been any other time. Okay, I take that back - when I was snowshoeing the snowshoes kicked up snow and ice onto the backs of my knees, where the ice particles stuck to my leg hairs. That was a little chilly.

There are even people on this forum who say they aren't wearing their kilts because it's winter. Unless there are arctic conditions (any skin exposure could result in frostbite) that's no excuse.

I've got 3 tartan kilts - 2 4yd, 1 8yd, which I wear on a regular basis to the office. All have proven to be warmer than any pants, in temperatures as low as -32C, here in Ottawa. I travel on public transit; generally spend over 2 hours a day, walking to/from transit stops and waiting . . . .

Other than the parking lot scenario, I go out to my deck for a smoke a few times a day. Since I'm already wearing my KiltJamas, and they're fleece, I don't have any problem at all. I usually change from my UGG slippers into the UGG boots for the cold days.

I spend quite a bit of time outside on a regular basis. The cold over the last winter hasn't bothered me at all with the exception of 2 nights that were near -20F, but with that kind of cold you'd be cold no matter what unless you dressed for the high arctic.

I've shoveled snow in my work kilt(see my gallery0. I've also spent entire days outside in temps that were near zero with strong cold winds blowing steadily. Keep your feet, hands, and head warm, and you'll be ok.
