Would this type of jacket be a good(cheap) alternative/substitue for a PC Jacket?

Now I'm no expert on this at all, but I think that if some of the pins that are on an Argyle or a PC would look alright on that. Of course to the kilt purists it wouldn't be proper, but I think it'd be classy as an alternative.

There is a variant of this particular jacket called a "Spencer jacket", or a "captain's jacket", because of its similarity to a naval mess jacket, that some formalwear stores rent -- the big difference is that is not "western" in style. Many times the local tux rental place will sell "used" jackets (the wear is usually not that bad, if even noticeable) for reasonable prices; several of our St. Andrew's Society members have them in place of PC's, some have added the PC buttons, others have left the cloth-covered buttons on. For those starting out, it is the perfect way to have a formal evening outfit until one can afford a PC, etc.

The only thing that really makes a "kilt jacket" a kilt jacket is that it has a high waist, so that it fits better with the kilt. That's really it. All the other stuff you commonly see (gauntlet cuffs, diamond shaped silver buttons, eppauletts, etc) are a nice extra touch, mostly inherited from the military, but are not necessary in the least.

Take an average Prince Charlie jacket, remove the gauntlett cuffs and silver buttons, and what you have is a fairly standard tuxedo jacket like the one you see here. This would work perfectly well with the kilt. You'll like very sharp, and save yourself a few hundred dollars to boot!

YES

This is what I do for jackets! The only thing that I change is with the buttons. I will remove the ones that come with the jacket and replace them with:
1).Celtic Knot buttons (available almost everywhere)
2).Silver "Diamond" buttons (at Scottish shops)
3).Irish Army buttons (available on eBay sometimes)

It's a GREAT look at a prcie that won't kill you!

Raphael...are you planning to bid on this jacket? I've been looking for one of these as well, and this one is in my size. I won't bid on it if you want it, though.

One point to consider, Raphael: a jacket in this style needs to be worn with a kilt incorporating the traditional 2" or so, 'rise'.

With a kilt sitting on the hips, or many other styles of modern kilt, the wearer of this jacket will present an expanse of shirt below the jacket and above the kilt - not good!

The problem can be overcome by trouser-wearers by wearing a cummerbund - but I've never seen one worn with a kilt and I don't think it would look too good either.
