Northern Exposure/ Tunes of Glory?
Last week I was up late (insomnia) and caught an old episode of "Northern Exposure" with in which a kilt was held up, (I believe he said it was a McCalister) but never worn. Ed says (pp) "Look, a Kilt! Just like in Tunes of Glory!" I had never heard of the film, but imdb.com had a bit to say. I was wondering if it is worth a rent, and I'm sure someone around here has seen it.

Tunes of Glory is one of my favourite movies. I recently bought it on DVD at HMV; you can read the reviews of it there. It's got Alec Guinness, John Mills, Dennis Price, and a whole mess ( ) of British actors/actresses. It's about the struggle for command of a Scottish regiment after the Second World War. It's definitely not an action movie, but it is a great depiction of life as an officer in a Scottish regiment. I think Guinness once said that it was his favourite role. It's got lots of kilts, piping, dancing and drinking. I'd heartily recommend it.
Sorry, if this topic has come up before, but this movie really gets me enthused! "Whisky, for the gentlemen that like it, and for the gentlemen that don't like it, whisky!"

Tunes of Glory/Northern Exposure
"Tunes of Glory", as the gents around here have heard me say many times, is, in my humble opinion, the BEST kilted movie of all time, and the BEST movie about the British Army tae boot! It is well worth the rent, not only for the kilts, customs and traditions of the Scottish regiments, but also for the story as well!
"Tunes of Glory" is my favourite all-time movie, bar none.
There was another reference to kilts in "Northern Exposure" from Maurice:
"These (kilts) belonged to my Grandfather. We were MacAllisters on the distaff side of the family. He was a royal highlander, 42nd regiment, Black Watch."
"Ahhh...I can still smell his tobacco, cherry blend. After the war, Granddad moved to the United States and bought a farm in northern Oklahoma. I used to spend my summers there. They were the best days of my life. At night, he'd stand on the porch and play these. The sound of the pipes, filling the heavy, still night air."
Bottom line: rent "Tunes of Glory".
"There's Greenwich time, and army time, and summer time and DUSTY time -- that's a tradition that goes back to Alemein, boy -- I expect you'll get used to it."
"Och, away home and watch your television set -- Muffin the Mule is on at five o' clock!"
"You'll no play 'Cock o' the North' -- yon's a cheesy tune!"
Cheers,
Todd

You know I miss the quirkiness of Dr. Fleishmen and the gang in Alaska. I have heard a few good things about tunes of glory from this board.
Anyone know where I could get a copy of brigadoon? My wife is a huge fan of that genre of film, she'd get the dancing, I'd get the kilts.

I didn't know Alec Guinness is in that one. Say no more, I will have to watch it once I found the time.
