Sailing in a kilt
I just bought a sailboat, just a little 9 footer. I'll be taking it out Sunday and of course I'll be wearing my Utilikilt. Not sure yet which one I'll wear, either the nightwatch for its quick drying ability or the Survival for its nano waterproofing and modesty snaps (gets windy ya know).
Either way I'll report back on the practicality of sailing a small boat in a kilt. This might call for something more in the way of a Macabi River Skirt.

That's not a vision I need in my head- a recently unkilted man, I mean. ![Confused](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
As far as sailing...sounds like great fun. To quote a Scottsman I work with..."I don't know where the wind is coming from, but I sure know where it's going."

I sail all the time, though not in dinghies right now, and while I know this is heresy on the board, I'm afraid that a kilt isn't the ticket for performance sailing. I'd never wear one to do anything but lounge around on my 30-footer. Then again, after spending all day in hot, sweaty foul weather gear and polypropylene, a kilt sounds kind of nice!
Now, to wear while working on deck on a 50 foot-plus square rigger...that's different!

I've been jonesing to get back on the water for longer than I care to remember... this thread isn't helping. I have to do something about this soon.

I just can't see myself wearing a kilt on the fore deck.
I just picture myself trying to haul up the storm jib and flashing whoever is at the helm.

Fortunately my first mate is my "mate" in truth, so she likes it when I flash her. Actually I suppose I'd be the first mate since she is the one who actually knows how to sail and is going to teach me.
I'm really wishing at this point I'd gotten a Macabi already because I think it would be the perfect thing. In the meantime the UK will have to do. At least in this boat pretty much everything is done from a sitting position so I dont think I'll accidentally expose myself.

I can hear it now, "All kilts on deck" Congratulations on your other hobby purchase. Hope that you have a great time, and am looking forward to hearing about it.

I went sailing for the first time today, and all went well. I wore the nightwatch UK and the material didnt blow around at all. Especially as this is a very small boat and you get wet sailing it, once the material got a little wet it stayed right in place.
Being the light camo material it also dried very quickly, and in the meantime I didnt have the wet shorts feeling and chafing you get with trunks.
All in all it worked very well! I'll probably order a green camo and use that one specifically for my sailing kilt, maybe add some nautical patches as Ron is fond of doing.
EDIT: to add pic

I know thats not the normal way to way show pictures, but I cant figure out how to add pics to a personal gallery. Can anyone help?

That's a fine way to show a piccie, thanks, and well done. It just shows that there is nothing that cannot be done well in a kilt!
