Students and of term ball/party
The wife and myself have been invited the the end of term students annual ball/party next Sat. It is being held this year in three huge marquees in the grounds of the castle.
Below is what I intend to wear .. I know Hamish will tell me off but I like my welsh national tartan tie. Do you all think it looks ok or shold I find a plain one.
Thanks
Derek

Mmmm....I think Hamish would be right.

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with Hamish. Sorry Derek.

The tie's FINE... with a Welsh tartan kilt.;)
There's pride, and then there's a little too much visual action. A plain, blue kilt would look great with it! (Hint, hint)

No Derek, I'm not going to tell you off, at least not in public! Just you wait until we next meet up, however!!
And, Derek: a leather jacket at a Ball?!!! Tut, tut! On the other hand, I know nothing of Welsh Balls ............ it could be that they are quite different to any Ball I have ever encountered.

?
Would it be possible to rent a kilt in the national tartan?

I have to agree with the majority here Derek, a plain tie would be much better. Hamish is right (as ever) about the jacket too, a more formal style would be more appropriate.
Having said that, I, like Hamish, am not familiar with Welsh balls, but presume they are similar to our English ones. However, I don't see what that has to do with your jacket!

Not sure the venue...end of term makes me think of roudy debauchery fun..
My uneducated suggestion would be to wear the same outfit, with no tie, and the shirt unbuttoned at the neck. Would seem to fit with the casualness of the leather jacket and kilt...
Have a Welsh cilt on my list for my Bowen, Vaughn, and Franklin blood.

Thanks guys for your input. Plain tie it will become, at least until I'm through the gate and I will take it off. Re the leather jacket ... we went last year to the ball (non kilted I'm afraid) and it is simply crazy student mayhem. On route we will call in for a beer in this little real ale pub in the city and I can assure you that it will be the same as last year, town will be full of students out for a pre drink drinks and the girls will be more blotto than the guys by 8pm before they even get there .. how they ever make there way and find the venue beats me, some could hardly stand up last year .. and it don't finish till 2am. We only spent an hour there last year, there was just too many people and loud music everywhere. Neither my wife or myself are 'squares', wev'e been on the road with our folk rock band for most of our live's, but its nice to go to the ball and sample a bit of 'atmo' then go back to a quieter pub. This year again the students have several artists performing in each of the marquees all evening long from boy and girl bands to solo artistes all top of the pops fame and headling in one of them is Tony Christie. So while it is a ball so to speak once your through the gate it is just loud and caotic. I actually love the proper kilt jackets etc but for some reason don't feel comfy in them. Crazy I know but I don't feel at ease. Never the less one day I SHALL buy one and adjust to it I'm sure ... I'll have to now since Ham's gonna tell me off at some point in the near future, no doubt when he comes over to stay with us before the end of the summer.
Thanks again guys
Derek

Put a leather, bomber-style jacket with that kilt an it'd be killer!
The bomber-style, or pilots-style leather jackets are shorter waisted, but look fantastic with kilts as I think both Bubba and Riverkilt have pointed out. I'm sure you can get a surplus RAF one around somewhere if you need to pinch a few pence.
