Music etc
This isn't really about kilts, but more about what kilt-wearing men like to do. Anybody here play an instrument? I'm a cellist myself, and it can be interesting playing in a kilt. I usually slide my sporran over to my hip so that it doesn't cause trouble.
I'm hoping to start wearing a black kilt w/ a tux shirt for my concerts and recitals, if I can get away with it. Not exactly traditional dress, but not what the audience would expect either. I can get away with it though; my college has "Fighting Scots" for a mascot, so several people wear kilts. Just not in concerts...yet.

In addition to bodhran and pennywhistles, I also play clarinet. In fact, clarinet is my main instrument. Recently, the vibes player in my jazz trio, who goes to a local synagogue, got some members of his cengreation to form a klezmer band.
Now, the heart and soul of klezmer is clarinet, eh? He asked me, the token Presbyterian in the group, to play. I went to our last Kletztette rehearsal wearing my black Stillwater kilt. They dug it, bigtime.
the kilted klezmer clarinetist. Oyyyy, ve.

That would look really smart, especially if the kilt is in black barathea wool from somewhere like "21st Century Kilts". Black Utilikilts, whilst excellent, just don't make the grade for formal wear.
I much regret that I cannot play any instrument in spite of having piano lessons for years and a couple of years private piping instruction, I cannot play a note! I just seem to have a mental block with music scores and could never master sight reading at all.

I played a little piano and side drum when I was younger, and have just started learning the pipes. I'm finding that the distance from my brain to my fingers has increased dramatically as I've gotten older. I do love the cello, though - it's one of my favourite instruments.

I started to try and learn music... But I have found that I share Hamish's mental block.

A lot of people have pointed out the new "black" heavyweight from Stillwater. I was thinking of that one. The whole "hidden tartan" idea appeals to me. I'll check out 21st Century though. Any ideas for replacing my cheapy ebay sporran with something slightly classier?
Yeah, cello is an amazing instrument. I've been playing classical music for years now, but I've discovered an Alasdair Frasier tune called "Caliope House" that sounds great on cello, so I'm going to expand my Celtic range a bit I think.

Toad, click on the USAKilts banner at the top of this page.
Check out the Rob Roy Day Sporran. Most folk around here have one... They are wonderful and practical.

This is a pic of me banging out some tunes on my drum kit, 4 days before my wedding in May 1997. I'm hiding behind a cymbal.
We were a rock/blues/country cover band made up of car club members, and we were recording a few songs just for fun.
Sadly, I sold the kit a few years ago and have pretty much given up playing.
