Kilts and funerals.
Heres a question for all the experts and experianced kilt wearers out there.I've thought about the wearing of a kilt to funerals and what I come up with is Full Formal, pretty much the same as for weddings.Your thoughts and advice will be apreciated. This is for future referance, and planning my kilt purchases.

I have been to funerals and memorials kilted, and I really do not go "Full Formal" I usually go wearing a white shirt and solid color tie (matching the kilt of course). But then again most are fairly informal and or graveside services or memorials.

I wouldn't go full formal for a funeral. That would be like wearing a tuxedo to a funeral, probably not the best choice. Instead, get a nice kilt jacket (not a Prince Charlie) and tie to wear with the kilt, and maybe a nice daywear or even semi-dress sporran.

I'm guessing that by formal you actually mean black but not black and chrome/silver/shiny. It's probably good to figure that out now, good in a morbid way, since most purchases are for more festive occasions. Kilt jackets are designed for the kilt, regular are not, so you'd need a more subdued one.
Really, though, I think that the kilt is a versatile piece of clothing and needs little dressing up. Go to a sombre sad colour scheme, nothing too flashy, and it should be appropriate.
I was going to tell you how I'd prepare but I hit the ingrained Celtic superstition of not talking about such things so as not to bring them on. Thin black tie, white shirt, Argyle jacket would just about cover it and now I'm getting spooked.

A little off the topic (but you all did it to me!!), I've been thinking of re writing my will to mention that I'd like to be buried in my best kilt.
I have heard of others doing that, I think it would be great, even tho I wouldn't really appreciate it fully at the time.
and I want a full pipe band and a big party following to celebrate the wonderful person I had been and the better place I'm going to.
there, that's my shopping list.
Oh yes, all the male guest must be kilted!!

14 days ago I attended the funeral of my wifes aunt .
I went kilted. My kilt (Modern Gunn)is quite dark. I wore Cream hose and flashes black brouges (Not ghillies), Black sporran
White double cuff dress shirt with black tie kilt belt and Charcoal grey Argyle jacket tweed kilt jacket.
I think PC would be a little over the top
Just MHO of course
I didn't ask first as I use this outfit as anyone would do a two or 3 piece suit.
Best of luck Funerals are always difficult times

Last year, my grandmother passed away. I wore my MacKenzie tartan kilt with black hose, matching tartan flashes, my black Docs, a black shirt, and my leather jacket. Worked pretty well. Got many compliments from relatives I hadn't seen in a few years.

Hey Breeze,
First, I live in the boonies. With that in mind went to a funeral of a lovely lady last year in my AmeriKilt forest green kilt with a white cable knit sweater, and lovat green kilt hose pulled up, no flashes, and black wingtips.
The departed loved my kilts. Got many compliments. Wasn't formal at all, just nicely dressed and fit with the level of dress of the others there.

My original thoughts were that formal, as for weddings would be a bit much.Being new to kilts, finding the middle ground between Formal and Casual is what eluded me.
I've seen numerous referances to kilt ties.Where can I find them?

All of the highland wear retailers have them, www.scottishlion.com. or www.scottishtartans.org. are both good reliable vendors. Lochcarron makes the best ties.
