Signed 1924 History of the Tartan book on Ebay!
Don't know if anyone else here saw this or not. A little pricey, but hey...it's a limited edition signed copy! Wish I had some spare $$.

The most I have paid for a first edition of Heinlein's is $145, and he is arguably a much more well read author than Mackay.
Maybe I am ignorant, but I don't think that a signed MacKay book commands this kind of price. There is the rarity factor, but only if there are a large number of people who want few copies available, so not sure if this would drive the price up.
I did just check out the seller and the last 10 or so of his auctions have been for books and almost all went for 100's of dollars. Doesn't mean they were all worth that much, but an indicator that he does have rare pieces.
Anybody else a rare/old book collector and have an opinion?

KCW,you should see the price of a signed first edition of Gone With The Wind.I've been collecting first and limited editions for several years. That price dosn't suprise me.Even some limited editions of Stephen Kings books have sold for several grand, unsigned.

SB, those manuscripts do not surprise me as commanding such a price, given their wide acceptance and the fame of the author in question. But I did not think Mackay's book was such a seminal work, nor was he such an accomplished author (although I have not done any research, so forgive me if I am wrong). I could very well be wrong, possibly 50 years from now a signed copy of the "Dummies Guide to the Internet" will command such a price. Who knows will be valued in the future?

I'll have to agree with your assesment of MacKay.The reason the price is high is because its signed by the author.Collecters will pay anything for that.I've seen signed books sell at auction for ten times the price of an unsigned one.
