    Saint Andrew's Day

Yes folks, it's getting close, so what are you doing?

It's a time to celebrate the kilt, so I'm determined not to let it go to waste!

I'm planning a big BBQ on my property and inviting friends from various groups who have some interest in things Scottish/Celtic.

    I do love a celebration!

It's summer down there so just everyone bring tents.

Graham, I seem to remember a river running through your property (from that satellite pic). Is it warm enough to bathe in or do we have to take turns for the shower?

I just found out that my wife's grandfather was born in Tasmania, and that she has always wanted to visit there. Maybe one of these years I will join you for a dram and a kilted celebration ;-)

    St. Andrew's Day Rally - Edinburgh - 26 November

This year the rally will be held on Saturday 26th November 2005 and the organisers fully intend to greatly increase the number of participants yet again. It is growing.

The muster will be in East Market Street (just up from the Hebrides Bar) at 11:30 am as usual, and the march will commence at midday prompt, led by the Stockbridge Pipe Band as always, marching across Waverly Bridge and then turning left onto Princes Street. The march carries on straight down Princes Street, and then up Lothian Road to Festival Square for the speeches. This year's featured speakers will be announced fairly soon, but will include the "Walk for Wallace" historian David R. Ross.

The post-rally venue will be the Cafe Royale, beside New Register House at the eastern end of Princes Street. Live music has been organised for this event, which will commence at 7 pm, and the West Lothian band Fiery Jack have already confirmed they will be playing, plus the newly-formed Albannach. Tickets will cost £8 for the evening (which will include 'nibbles'), with the music commencing around 7pm. Applications for tickets may be made to the web site in advance, or purchased from organisers on the day (providing there are any left). More than half the tickets have already been sold.

Following the speeches, McEwans have organised a pub trail, and they will have representatives in Festival Square handing out collectors cards and pub trail maps. The idea is that people visit each of the pubs on the map, collect a stamp on the card and then redeem the card in the final pub for a prize. The nature of the prize is still being confirmed - depending on whether McEwans are willing to fund it - but is likely to be a free pint. The organisers have also asked McEwans if they can produce St. Andrew's Day 2005 T-shirts, which can be awarded to everyone taking part in the trail. The route will be planned so that it runs easily from Festival Square, finishing as close as possible to the Cafe Royal.

This Web site features some pictures and press reports from both the inaugural and second rallies.

Here's how it's going in Antarctica:

    14 November 2005
    SCOTS OF THE ANTARCTIC
    By Claire Prentice
FOR most of us November means the onset of winter and a time to hunker down to endure the first chills of the season.

But for one group of Scots it heralds the onset of summer and a chance to prepare for the mother of all parties.

But they're not expecting a suntan this summer. The temperature will not get above five degrees. And the only neighbours they can invite to their party are seals and penguins.

The residents of the British Antarctic Survey Base near the South Pole are launching themselves full swing into the preparations for the world's most southerly St Andrew's Day celebration. And the Scots of the Antarctic will be taking the lead.

'We love any excuse for a celebration out here,' says Kirk Watson, 29, from Aberdeenshire, who has been in Antarctica for the past year. 'People love getting dressed up and we Scots know how to party.'

The hardy researchers started planning weeks ago, emailing an order for haggis, neeps and tatties and a generous supply of whisky. The food is due to arrive any day on the boats and planes that bring in new workers and fresh food supplies.
